Wynona Wallace, Mixed Media Artist
Wynona Wallace is a young and inspiring artist and a third-year student in Visual Studies at the University of Calgary. She mainly explores diversifying the art of mixed media by combining digital and traditional techniques or methods to create a varied series of works. This interests her artistic practices due to exploring and discovering different mediums that led her to develop the concept of hybridity and to produce dynamic visual images. With this art-making decision, each of her thematic works surrounds the concept of womanhood, cultural backgrounds, and selfhood, which were reflected by her personal experiences and stories as a young Filipino woman artist.
This began with investigating aspects of her life that will help her develop the main motifs, messages, or visual languages for each of her works. She recollected old photographs, memorable items, found objects around her house, or any significant handwritten letters that are associated with her chosen themes. She utilizes those ideas in her drafts and processes through experimentation in how she can incorporate their materiality, existence, textures, or purpose.
This led to merging photography or digital painting with stencils, layering, collages, and letterings. Wynona aims to express a collection of tenderized works that have a sense of resilience with vulnerability, a transition with pain and healing, and acceptance of life’s struggles.
