Terry Wong | City Councillor for Ward 7
Terry Wong is the former City Councillor for Ward 7. During his 30-year career in management and as a manager at The City (1984-2014) Terry successfully established Calgary’s first GIS-based Computer-Assisted Mass Appraisal System in 1999 that brought in market-value based property assessment systems of valuation. Later, Terry engaged in city-wide corporate reorganization efforts (2000), the divestiture (and later cancelled sale) of ENMAX (2001), realignment of corporate IT budgets (i.e. operating, capital, and reserves), the establishment of corporate project management and systems, and 3 sets of 3-year of corporate business planning and budgeting. Earlier Terry had a five-year health/hospital management system professional career (1979-1984) working to bring new technologies and information systems into B.C. and Alberta hospitals.
Leading up to his election as City Councillor in 2021, Terry established and operated a municipal management consulting agency and led the establishment of Calgary’s ‘Chinatown Business Improvement Area’ where he served as Board Vice-Chair, then Executive Director until 2021. Terry also served as President of the Hounsfield Heights Briar Hill Community Association (2018-2021) and as a community advocate particularly in matters related to small business, land use planning and development.
Born and raised in Vancouver, B.C., Terry is a second-generation Chinese-Canadian to parents who operated local businesses and was entrenched in Vancouver’s Chinatown which became his cultural roots and upbringing. Through recent years, Terry has been an opponent to ethnic and cultural racism; an advocate for multi-cultural respect through acts of community contribution; a proponent of a more equitable and just society through inclusion; and finally, a builder of strong communities through learning, not erased, history.
